Xavier University is a dreaded “bubble team” ahead of the Big East Tournament this week

It might already be too late for Travis Steele’s team.

Facing what some analysts were calling a must-win game against Marquette on Saturday, Xavier lost 66-59 to an average Golden Eagles squad to drop to a 6-7 record in conference play.

Xavier is widely considered to be a “bubble team.” Their record this season suggests they are not guaranteed to clinch a berth to NCAA March Madness, although not all hope is lost either. Their results in the upcoming Big East tournament, as well as the success of rival bubble teams, could decide whether Xavier qualify for the NCAA tournament or the NIT tournament.

The loss against Marquette will sting the Musketeers as they have played significantly fewer Big East games—and as a result, each game matters more—than other teams due to COVID-19 cancellations. By comparison, Creighton played seven more conference games than Xavier.

If Xavier is to convince the selection committee they belong with the other top 67 teams in March Madness this year, they’ll need to make a run in the Big East tournament this week.

Some analysts think Xavier is still alive despite the loss to Marquette, but the Musketeers would be wise to treat their last loss as a final wake-up call.

The BIG EAST Tournament will begin tonight and run through March 13 at Madison Square Garden. Fox Sports 1 will televise all games.
