Petals & Wicks offering DIY candle kits and other items to keep you entertained this winter

For those looking for a new hobby, or a project to do at home with family, Petals & Wicks at 119 Main St. in Hamilton offers a selection of DIY Candle Kits. Participants can be creative, choose their favorite scents, and have fun making their own scented candles.

“We have received rave reviews from people who have loved this experience at home with their kids, and with each other,” says owner Sherry Hoskins, who runs Petals & Wicks with her husband, Mike.

The community-oriented business first got its start in floral design as Sherry’s Petals in 2016, and transformed into Petals & Wicks in 2017, specializing in customized, scented candle-pouring. The couple grew up and raised their family in Hamilton and wanted to give back to the community by locating a business in Hamilton’s downtown core.

“We came across this candle bar experience, poured our first candles, and we fell in love with the whole experience around creating your own scent,” Hoskins says.

Typically, patrons can come into the Candle Bar and blend up to three of Petals & Wicks 100-plus scents to make a custom candle or body product. Petals & Wicks candles are made from high-quality soy wax. Honeycrisp Apple and Coffee Bean are the shop’s top two scents. Other popular favorites this past fall included Apple Maple Bourbon and Pumpkin Souffle. White Birch and Pine Needles scents are popular during the holidays. One new scent, Sweater Weather, is also popular this year.

“Candles have been around for hundreds of years, but the ability to come in and create your own custom scent, instead of just going to the store and buying what’s on the shelf, is what makes it so unique. It’s so creative and fun. People love the whole experience,” Hoskins says.

Once COVID-19 hit, Petals & Wicks immediately pivoted to create the DIY Candle Kits. There are several DIY Candle Kit options to choose from, including the Eco Glass DIY Candle Making At Home Kit. There is also a Frosty Sand Wax Candle Kit with colored and scented sand wax, so participants can layer the colors and scents while making each creation.

In addition to ordering DIY Candle Kits, groups can still make candles in store with a reservation.

“They can select their scent, and I created a video that goes with [the kit]. It also includes all the materials and printed step-by-step instructions. It includes everything in the kit that they need to make two candles at home,” Hoskins says.

Customers can choose their scents, and each kit makes two candles. DIY Candle Kits can be delivered (local delivery within 10 miles,) picked-up in the store, at curbside or they can be shipped.

“We try to create that same experience at home that they would get inside our Candle Bar,” Hoskins says, “In a small unit at home, they still have an opportunity to do something together. People are looking for something they can do as a family or in small groups.

“One of the most fun parts is they get to name their candle, decorate their label and make it unique to their candle,” she says.

In addition to the DIY Candle Kits and other online ordering options, Petals & Wicks has an in-person Candle Bar, a Party Bar and an on-site Body Shop and Marketplace at its shopfront in Hamilton.

Currently, Petals & Wicks shop is closed on Mondays, and open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m.; Friday noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Patrons can make a reservation for an experience at the Candle Bar, book the Party Bar or order online at petalsnwicks.com.
