Many spots to take moms for their special day

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the United States on May 10, 1908, when Anna Jarvis organized a worship service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. She had begun a campaign in 1905, after her mother died, to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday. By 1911, all states celebrated an observance (West Virginia was the first, in 1910). Congress passed a resolution and President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

If you live far away, whether it’s a card or a phone call, or both, Sunday is the day to let Mom know that you’re thinking about her. And if you live close, following are some ideas for brunch or spending the day with her.
