Plant trees and learn more about local species at one of these local events
The end of April is almost here, but before it ends, we have one more nature-themed holiday to celebrate—Arbor Day! A holiday that began in Nebraska in the late 1800s to encourage people to plant trees has become one that all 50 states celebrate, including Ohio. This year, Arbor Day falls on April 29, and you can attend several local events to honor the day.
ArBeer Day
4-7 p.m. at Hamilton’s Urban Backyard (the HUB), 501 Main St., Hamilton
The Butler Soil & Water Conservation District and the HUB have teamed up for this unique celebration of Arbor Day. Attendees can take home a free sapling, pick up an ArBeer Day T-shirt, and enjoy brews from local breweries at this event. Food trucks and live music will also be on hand.
Cincinnati Parks Arbor Day Ceremony & Tree Planting
10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Hays-Porter School, 1030 Cutter St., Cincinnati
Cincinnati Parks plans to start the day with an Arbor Day ceremony in the garden of Hays-Porter School. Afterward, volunteers will plant 29 trees along John and Clark streets. Those wishing to volunteer should sign up online.
Arbor Day Tree Hunt
Noon-2 p.m. at California Woods Nature Preserve, 5400 Kellogg Ave., Cincinnati
Cincinnati Parks is inviting nature lovers to head to California Woods Nature Preserve for an Arbor Day hike. Participants are being asked to see how many of the preserve’s 50 documented species of trees they can identify.
Arbor Day Walking Tour
10 a.m.-noon at Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum, 4521 Spring Grove Ave., Cincinnati
Spring Grove’s director of horticulture will take participants on a walking tour of the arboretum’s trees. Advanced registration is required.
