Staying Steady in Unsteady Times

 Staying Steady in Unsteady Times

How to center yourself as the world gets more complicated

“Our capacity to make peace with another person and with the world depends very much on our capacity to make peace with ourselves.”

—Thich Nhat Hanh

These are tumultuous times. A relentless news cycle bombards us with war, violence and environmental crises. We brace ourselves—mentally and physically. Our shoulders tense, our breath becomes shallow. How do we stay steady when the world feels so unsteady?

The answer lies in small, intentional acts of mindfulness. One of the simplest ways to regulate our nervous system is through breath. When stress rises, pause. Close your eyes, inhale deeply and extend your exhale—activating your body’s natural calming response.

Begin each morning with a moment of stillness—whether through journaling, prayer, meditation or gratitude. This practice sets the tone for your day. Move your body with intention. Yoga, tai chi or even a mindful walk can help process the weight of the world.

Spending time in nature—touching a tree, walking barefoot, feeling the sun—helps release negativity and restore balance. Nourish yourself with whole foods, hydrate well and curate your media intake. Be mindful of content that drains rather than uplifts.

Finally, when the world feels overwhelming, shrink your focus. Ask: Where am I at war within myself? Start there. Personal peace ripples outward. We may not control the world’s chaos, but we can cultivate steadiness within ourselves.
