Local brewery set to open second location is set to open late 2023

HighGrain Brewing may be young compared to an array of Cincinnati’s breweries, but it has made an impact on the city quickly and is set to open a second location later this year.

Austin Neal, marketing director, says High Grain Brewing opened in 2019 in its Silverton location at 6860 Plainfield Road, just prior to the global pandemic. Because the pandemic shut most businesses down, including HighGrain, the brewery switched gears and turned to a distribution model.

“We bought a canning line,” Neal says. “We invested in some more equipment and started making labels and putting our beer into packaging so that we could get into stores. During that time, that was really the only way people were going to try your beer.”

HighGrain slowly and cautiously opened its doors to the public—taking all the proper safety precautions—and worked toward being a neighborhood brewery. Many people took an interest in HighGrain’s offerings, Neal says, so they decided to move “full steam ahead” with distributing.

“We’re very much that quality neighborhood brew pub. But on the other side, we are now producing way more beer than we ever initially anticipated. We’re in over two dozen Krogers. We’re in Jungle Jim’s and we’re in a lot of neighborhood bottle shops,” Neal says. “You can find us on draft downtown and in the neighborhood areas. It’s kind of been a quick, little explosion.”

Because of the success, HighGrain is set to open another location in Springfield Township at the former Brentwood Bowl. Neal says HighGrain is converting the 49,000-square-foot building into a mixed-used building—primarily for brewery production. This new location will continue the company’s sustainability mission.

“We are well intertwined with the Silverton community—being on different programs and different things through the city to help out the schools, to help out our community and be able to take that to Springfield Township and be able to do that again … I think it is a great aspect of what we do as a company,” co-owner Brian Liscano says.

No matter what the future holds for HighGrain, the brewery will remain a gathering place for people to enjoy, says Neal.

“We want to be that brewery that no matter what community we’re in—we have two, three, four or five locations—we do things for the community around us that makes people feel at home and comfortable with us being there,” Neal says.
