Heritage Village’s June event enables visitors to get hands-on with military history
This June, no time machine will be necessary to meet members of the Roman Legion, militia men from the Revolutionary War and World War II soldiers. Instead, history buffs can head to Heritage Village Museum and Educational Center in Sharon Woods for the Marching Through Time event on June 11.
This unique event fits perfectly with mission of Heritage Village. “Founded in 1965, we are a collection of historic buildings, from 1804 to 1891, relocated from sites throughout Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Our focus is telling the story of daily life in Southwest Ohio from first pioneer settlement until the end of the 19th century,” says Steve Preston, the museum’s executive director. “Marching Through Time allows the museum to highlight the evolution of military and civilian life at different times in history.”

Starting at 10 a.m. and through 4 p.m., visitors to the museum will see reenactors bring Roman Legion, Holy Roman Empire Landsknechts, Revolutionary War, Wayne’s Legion, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Civil War, World War I and WWII British paratroopers to life. They’ll tell the stories of those who were on the front lines and demonstrate the weapons of the time. In addition, visitors will be able to view artifacts, such as a WWII jeep. There will also be historical presentations and a performance of Civil War-era music by the 275 Brass Band.
“This event allows for history lovers of any age and any time period to experience actual living historians portray what they may have only read about. Demonstrations, hands-on activities and personal interactions help everyone learn and enjoy history in a safe, educational environment,” says Preston.
And this can all be done while enjoying the atmosphere of Heritage Village. The village and museum is comprised of 13 historic buildings, including the Chester Park Train Station and the Fetter General Store. Typically open May through September, Wednesday through Sunday, for guided tours, self-guided tours and exhibits and October through April, Wednesday through Friday, for self-guided tours and exhibits, the Marching Through Time event provides history lovers another opportunity to enjoy Heritage Village.
“[My favorite part of the event is] seeing the reactions of visitors to the clothing, accoutrements and activities of the lesser-known eras of history,” says Preston.
The Marching Through Time event will be held June 11, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Heritage Village Museum and Educational Center, 11500 Lebanon Road, Sharonville. Admission is $10 per adult, $5 for children 5-11 and free for members and children 4 and under. 513-563-9484, heritagevillagecincinnati.org.
