Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum to open 23rd holiday light show
For family and friends looking for a way to spread some holiday cheer, Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum will be lighting up the night with its Holiday Lights on the Hill show. The Journey Borealis theme is returning for a second year with new displays. From Nov. 19 through Jan. 2, visitors will be able to join in on a joyful celebration.
Pyramid Hill roadways will take guests on a 2.5-mile journey that includes holiday art installations and more than 1 million lights. Drivers will pass through unique segments such as Germany’s Candy Cane Forest and Grinch’s Greenland. This year’s show introduces contemporary media including installation art, light art and projection mapping. The light-show tradition, at 1763 Hamilton Cleves Road, Hamilton, has occurred every Christmas since 1999.
A projection project on the route created by Sam Dorgan, a multimedia artist, also will be featured this year. In a news release, Dorgan discussed her content and what guests will be able to see during the show: “‘Soaring Forms in the Nativity’ is a contemporary representation of the nativity of Jesus. I took inspiration from the neighboring sculpture by Josefa Filkosky called ‘Soaring Forms in Red’ and the light display of a traditional Nativity scene. I wanted this animation to be a bridge between the sculptures and light display as well as an effervescent celebration of Jesus’ birth and all the joy and love the Christmas season brings. My hope is that the passersby feel the warmth and love expressed in these vivacious colors and spastic dancing shapes.”
Journey Borealis features a holiday soundtrack performed by the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra with tracks sung by the Cincinnati Boychoir. By downloading an app titled Otocast, guests can be immersed and experience the light show as the soundtrack plays during the journey.
Returning for a second year, the Ross High School Art Club and the Bombshells of Cincinnati are helping bring Journey Borealis to life. Jessica Edwards of the Bombshells said: “The Bombshells of Cincinnati are delighted to be a part of Journey Borealis for the second year in a row. This year, we transformed part of the landscape into a saturated Candy Cane Forest to immerse the viewer into a brisk peppermint bliss for the season. We are honored to be a part of this amazing exhibit with so many beloved and exceptional artists.”
Numerous individuals, organizations and foundations have contributed time and financial support to the production, with key sponsors being the Carol Ann and Ralph V Haile Jr. Foundation, Vincent Lighting Systems, Wilks Insurance, Community First Solutions, Spooky Nook Sports, Watson Gravel, Superior Hyundai North and ODW Logisitics. Pyramid Hill also is supported by the Hamilton County Foundation and Artswave.
Admission is free for City of Hamilton residents on Tuesdays. Residents have to show either a current utility bill or ID for proof of residency.
