In recent years there has been a huge shift from traditional cable services to streaming options such as YouTube TV or Hulu TV.

But sports’ fans faith in these services may be in question these days. For Reds fans to watch their favorite team on TV each game, they’ll likely need to make the shift back to cable.

What’s Happening?

Sinclair Broadcasting bought Fox Sports Ohio (the network that usually airs Reds games) from the Walt Disney Co. in 2019 before renaming the channel to Bally Sports Ohio.

This acquisition means the new broadcasting team featuring Barry Larkin will not be heard by YouTube TV or Hulu TV subscribers—something that was possible in recent seasons and is sure to disgruntle fans.

What Are My Options?

If you’re desperate to watch the Reds, there are still options for you, but they’re not as convenient.

Most consumers will find Bally Sports Ohio on Spectrum cable packages, WOW! cable packages and through DirectTV packages. The only streaming choice currently offered is AT&T Now.

The Impact of These Changes

In an era where content is easily found at a single click, it’s bad news for Major League Baseball that a large demographic of fans is unable to watch games due to local blackout restrictions on major streaming providers.

Popularity in baseball, especially among young people, is a point of concern for the league as they have looked for ways to speed up play and improve the game. Not carrying games on platforms known for its younger customer base is surely not what the MLB had in mind entering the season.
