High school playoffs are underway, Rose Lavelle impresses for the USWNT, and more
Sports have continued during the pandemic, and that includes women’s sports. Here’s your update on three things you should know about the state of women’s sports in the region.
Girls Basketball District Finals are Nearing
The OHSAA State Championship playoff games are just beginning this week with district semifinal matches taking place across Ohio.
Top seeded teams from the Cincinnati region will know if they advance to the district finals round early this week as programs such as Mount Notre Dame, Turpin, Mason and Lakota West wrap up their first game on Monday. Most teams will play the district finals game this Saturday.
For Mason High School, they must win six straight games to maintain their pursuit of perfection and win a state title to go 24-0 on the year.
Rose Lavelle Carries the U.S. Women’s National Team
Manchester City star and Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle is used to performing on the biggest stage, but her performance in the first game of the SheBelieves Cup is putting even more doubts to rest.
Her 79th minute winner against Canada came as a substitute off the bench, and, at the time of writing this, expects to earn more minutes against Argentina on Wednesday. She also started in a 2-0 victory over Brazil on Sunday.
The former Sycamore United and Cincinnati United youth player is one of the most talented players in the national team setup. With a new head coach (Vlatko Andonovski) in charge since USA was victorious in the last World Cup, these top performances are a good sign for Lavelle moving forward.
Dayton Women’s Basketball Loses First A-10 Game
The Flyers’ 11 game undefeated streak in conference play is snapped after a 64-57 loss to Saint Louis on Saturday. It was only Dayton’s second loss of the year, the last of which happened back in December against Akron.
Only two regular season games remain for Dayton as they try to hold onto the top spot in the Atlantic 10 conference with both Fordham and Saint Louis attempting to chase them down.
The women’s A-10 basketball tournament will take place from March 10-14.
