Runs, walks and wellness programs offer ways for residents to stay active

As summer settles into the Greater Cincinnati region, community organizations are inviting residents to lace up their running shoes, unroll their yoga mats and take part in events designed to promote health and connection. From downtown races to outdoor wellness classes, June and July will offer a variety of opportunities for families and individuals looking to stay active.

One of the first major events on the calendar is the Cohen Family Upstander 5K and Family Day on June 28. The event will take participants on a course around Union Terminal and through parts of the West End and Over-the-Rhine. Organizers also plan live music, family activities and a pickleball tournament, creating an atmosphere that extends beyond the race itself. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with race-day packet pickup opening an hour earlier.

Outdoor wellness programs have also returned to Cincinnati parks. Weekly yoga sessions at Glenway Park are among the offerings available through the Cincinnati Parks and Recreation wellness initiative. Classes are open to participants of all experience levels and are designed to provide an accessible option for those seeking low-impact exercise in a community setting. A June 18 class is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the West Side park.

Northern Kentucky residents will have a chance to celebrate Independence Day with exercise during the annual Firecracker 5K in Fort Thomas. Hosted by the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, the July 4 event includes a competitive run, a walking option and a free children’s fun run. Activities begin with the kids race at 7:40 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8:15 a.m. at Tower Park. Organizers also encourage participants to wear patriotic colors and bring gently used children’s running shoes for donation.

Later in the month, runners and walkers can head downtown for the Queen City 5K on July 25. The race begins at 8 a.m. and follows a route along the riverfront near several Cincinnati landmarks, including Great American Ball Park and Smale Riverfront Park.
