Memorial Day in Greater Cincinnati is more than the start of summer—it’s a moment to pause and honor those who served

Local communities will mark the Memorial Day weekend with one-of-a-kind flag displays, heartfelt cemetery tributes, commemorative parades and ceremonies led by veterans. For Ohio families, these events offer simple yet endlessly meaningful moments: a child asks why flags are placed in a field, someone pauses quietly at a memorial or neighbors line a street as a parade passes by. 

First on the list is Arlington Memorial Gardens’ Field of Memories in Springfield Township, which houses a striking display with 1,000 American flags on view from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 22-25. Admission is free. 

Meanwhile, Spring Grove Cemetery will host its Veterans Tribute from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 22-25, honoring thousands of service members buried in Cincinnati, including over 40 Union generals and prominent figures like Civil War Major General Joseph Hooker. The ceremony lets visitors walk through one of the city’s most historic cemeteries and reflect on the lives and service of those buried there.  

Families can also spend time at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Eden Park, a remembrance site highlighted as a favorite by Cincinnati Parks. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 10 holds annual commemorations there, often centered on the message: “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.” 

Other communities are also holding events throughout the region. North College Hill’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, with the parade starting at 11 a.m. and the ceremony at noon. West Chester will also host a Memorial Day parade and ceremony Monday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 

Many families will also welcome summer with a visit to Soak City at Kings Island or a bike ride along the Loveland trail. But before cookouts, pool days and summer plans take over, Greater Cincinnati offers places to pause, honor and remember.
