Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff announced the news in a new video

The 2023 Western & Southern Open was bittersweet for many Cincinnatians. Many worried that it would be the last time the historic tournament took place in its home city. 

But officials confirmed Tuesday that the tournament will continue to take place in Mason for the next 25 years. The Western & Southern Open announced the news in a video featuring 2023 singles champions Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff. 

“Your wonderful tournament is staying in Cincinnati,” Djokovic says in the video. 

For the past several months, it seemed possible the Western & Southern Open’s 125-year history in the Cincinnati area would come to an end, with Charlotte, North Carolina making a strong play to host the tournament. 

In the end, the Open’s Cincinnati roots beat out Charlotte’s bid.  

“The passion and commitment of this community to keep the tournament here was an undeniable factor in our decision to stay,” tournament owner Benjamin Navarro says in a press release. “This tournament and its history are special. We’re excited to add to its legacy and create a world-class tennis experience for players and fans.” 

More than $200 million will be invested in improvements to the Lindner Family Tennis Center. In addition, the tournament will expand to two weeks of competition for men and women in 2025. 

“Cincinnati, I’ve won three of your trophies,” Djokovic says in the announcement clip. “I would love to have a fourth one in August.”
