Costumes worn in popular movies, TV shows on display

The Taft Museum of Art in downtown Cincinnati recently premiered a special exhibit, Jane Austen: Fashion & Sensibility. The exhibit features costumes worn by Hollywood celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Judi Dench, Colin Firth, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant.

The collection of costumes, coming from London, England, is appearing for the first time in North America at the Taft. The exhibit runs June 11 through Sept. 4.

More than 50 costumes and accessories worn in eight acclaimed film adaptations of classic Jane Austen novels can be viewed. The costumes are reminiscent of the Regency era, and the exhibit contains ball gowns, hats, jackets, wedding dresses, day dresses, waistcoats, jewelry, riding habits and more. The exhibit includes costumes from Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Mansfield Park.

The exhibit opens as the museum completes its $12.7 million Bicentennial Infrastructure Project designed to protect and preserve the 200-year-old home of former U.S. President William Howard Taft. The building is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Admission is free for Taft members, $8 for guests of members, $18 for non-members and $16 for seniors. The museum is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. You can learn more and buy tickets on the museum’s website.
