Todd Frazier leads Team USA to the Olympics, high school teams are crowned state champions and Chad Johnson is boxing
Summer officially starts June 20, but the spring sports season is already coming to a close. Let’s look at the biggest headlines of the day from a Cincinnati sporting perspective.
Todd Frazier’s Final Act?
Former Cincinnati Reds third baseman Todd Frazier was a fan favorite during his days at Great American Ball. The slugger spent six years in Cincinnati, represented the Reds as an All-Star twice and even won the 2015 Home Run derby before suiting up for five other teams.
Now a veteran free agent, Frazier is part of the 2021 USA Baseball roster to qualify for this summer’s Olympics. The Tokyo Olympics marks the first Olympics since 2008 that baseball will be an official sport at the Games. Frazier went 4-4 (a triple away from the cycle) and stole a base against Venezuela and is one of five former all-stars on the diamond for the United States.
Active Major League Baseball players are not competing in the Olympics this year, giving players like Frazier an opportunity to represent his country on the biggest stage.
Mariemont High School Wins Titles
Mariemont HS is now synonymous with lacrosse. On Saturday, both the boys and girls lacrosse teams were victorious in Division II state championships at Ohio Wesleyan University.
It’s an impressive accomplishment for a school that is used to success in lacrosse. It is Mariemont’s ninth appearance in a state finals game, with its most recent title in 2017. Mariemont now have five state titles to its name on the boys’ side.
Chad Johnson is Back?
Ochocinco is in the news again.
Chad Johnson, inspired by Tim Tebow’s comeback to the NFL, believes he could make the Bengals roster this season and earn around 750 receiving yards. The former Cincinnati Bengal retired from the National Football League almost a decade ago.
He also had glowing praise for current Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, saying “the sky’s the limit” for Cincinnati’s franchise player.
Johnson has stayed busy in retirement, most recently training for his boxing debut last Sunday in the Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul undercard event.
