The celebration of the city’s brewing history continues

Cincinnati’s signature beer festival returns to Over-the-Rhine this weekend for a three-day celebration of brewing heritage. What began as a revival of the city’s 19th-century German brewing traditions has grown into one of the region’s most famous annual events. With numerous happenings going on throughout the weekend, here’s how to make sense of all there is to do.

What Is Bock Beer, Exactly?

Bock is a strong, malt-forward German-style lager traditionally brewed to mark the transition from winter to spring. Popular for its notes of caramel and toasted malt, the drink contains a slightly higher alcohol content than a standard lager. Variations include traditional bock, doppelbock and Maibock.

While enjoying your libations, throughout the district, you’ll find German-inspired staples like bratwurst, pretzels and schnitzel among others to pair with your beer.

The Opening Parade

The festivities begin Friday evening with the annual Bockfest Parade. It will make its way through downtown and into Over-the-Rhine. There, spectators can see marching bands, brewery representatives, costumed participants and more.

Brewery District Celebrations

Rather than one central hall like in the past, Bockfest now unfolds across participating venues throughout the historic Brewery District. Bars, breweries and restaurants host live music, specialty beverages and themed menus all weekend long.

Many breweries release limited-edition bock beers specifically for the festival, ranging from light to dark libations.

Specifically, Over-the-Rhine provides the perfect backdrop for a self-guided tour. Official Bockfest Halls include Moerlein Lager House, Rhinegeist Brewery, Arnold’s Bar & Grill and Taft’s Ale House.
