Support nonprofits while indulging your green thumb at these sales
April is almost here and, for many of us, that means it’s time to start thinking about gardening. Many local garden centers are opening their doors, but another option for plant lovers is the region’s many plant sales. In addition to offering a wide variety of plants, these sales often support local nonprofits, too. We’ve found four upcoming plant sales that all gardeners should be adding to their calendars.
Civic Garden Center’s Plant Sale
Online sales start April 1, in-person event 9.a. to 2 p.m. May 7
The Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati, 2175 Reading Road, Cincinnati
Due to the popularity of last year’s online sale, the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati is bringing back the online sale along with the 2022 in-person event. Every dollar spent at the sale goes toward the center’s core programs, including the Community Gardens program, Green Learning Station, school gardens and youth education, and its Hands-on Horticulture program.
Cincinnati Nature Center’s Spring Native Plant Sale
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22
Rowe Woods Visitor Center, 4949 Tealtown Road, Milford
The Cincinnati Nature Center’s sale will feature herbs, perennials, flowering trees and shrubs that can assist our local pollinators and other wildlife.
Tecumseh Land Trust’s Native Plant Sale & Swap
10 a.m. to noon April 23
Glen Helen Nature Preserve, 405 Corry St., Yellow Springs
North of Cincinnati in Yellow Springs, the Tecumseh Land Trust will conduct its annual plant sale and swap. During the event, you can buy new plants or swap one you already own for something else. Only native Midwest plans can be swapped. In addition to the plant sale, the Tecumseh Land Trust is also planning to include some Earth Day activities for an extra level of fun.
Cincinnati Zoo Native Plant Sale
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23, May 14, May 28, June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Sept. 24 & Oct. 8
Bowyer Farm, 2210 Mason-Montgomery Road, Mason
The Cincinnati Zoo’s annual Native Plant Sale will occur throughout the year in 2022, with the first sale in April. The zoo says the sale features many well-grown, hard-to-find and ecologically important plants. The sales are free to attend, but advance registration is required.
