As managing partner of the Cincinnati office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, Nathaniel Lampley, Jr. does his best to work hard and lead by example.

A Hamilton native, Lampley received his B.A. from the University of Dayton. In 1988, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law with his J.D. Since earning his degree, Lampley has excelled in his field.

Not only does Lampley lead an office of successful lawyers, he is the first African-American to head a Cincinnati law firm with more than 50 members. True, he's making history, but Lampley attributes his success to the quality of his employer. "Vorys is about excellence, it always has been. Being the first African-American in my position is merely a continuation of that tradition," he says.

Lampley practices in the area of business litigation, representing large companies in both individual and class-action suits. His experience includes state and federal courts as well as administrative agencies.

For Lampley, it's all about the clients. "Every time the phone rings, it's usually someone who needs my help. It is a tremendous honor to be able to help people," he notes. The challenge posed by acting in a representative capacity for a company is something Lampley has always enjoyed about his practice.

Lampley says each case he handles is treated with the utmost importance. Clients put their trust in him to represent them well, so no case can be favored over another. "As a lawyer you have an ethical requirement to represent each case zealously and to the best of your ability within the bounds of the law," he points out.

As if heading a large firm wasn't enough, Lampley is also active within the community. He is a member of the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati, and the United Way Volunteers Leadership Development Program also benefits from his participation. Lampley has served on the board of trustees of the Cincinnati Ambassadors, Inc. He currently sits on the board for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor and the Christ Hospital Sports Medicine Institute.

While Lampley has achieved a huge amount of success, he is quick to share the glory. "I am privileged to work at a law firm that attracts excellent and competent lawyers."
