Napa, Sonoma and Bordeaux might be the leading names in winemaking, but don't book a flight just yet. Great places to taste premium wines can be reached in just a short drive.

For unique wines, food and a romantic setting, Vinoklet Winery (1106 Colerain Ave., Colerain) is a sure bet. Vinoklet, which means "little wine house" in Croatian, sits on a former dairy farm with lush vineyards and three lakes. The winery was started by Croatian immigrant and wine aficionado KreÅ¡o Mikulić in 1984, and has been selling the fermented fruits of his labor ever since.

With spirited selections including Cincinnatus (dry, robust red), Tears of Joy (mellow white) and La Dolce Vita (sweet, flavorful red), tastings at Vinoklet make for a cheerful excursion. Wines aren't the only draw. Guests can enjoy restaurant offerings such as New York strip steak, salmon fillets or ricotta ravioli in Vinoklet's solarium or open-air gazebo. To make it an extended trip, stay at the bed and breakfast on site.

Meier's store in Silverton offers tastings daily and sells wine by the glass and bottle at its wine bar.
