When husband and wife team Brandon Davis and Tracy Morgan opened Balance Café & Smoothies in October 2013, they wanted to be an alternative restaurant.

“We had the idea of bringing in something healthier [to the area],” says Davis.

And so they did, starting with the menu. Many of Balance Café & Smoothies’ menu items can be made gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and/or vegetarian.

As the developer of the café’s menu, Morgan understands the importance of people’s dietary needs and knowing exactly what is in each food item.

“We customize everything,” says Morgan. “People are shocked that we do.”

The owner-operator pair also knows that it’s only a matter of time before people are eating healthier food options on a more regular basis.

“Our food is fresh, made-to-order,” says Davis. “You feel good after you eat it.”

Between regular customers and catering, Davis and Morgan are seeing a trend in popular menu items. They agree that their number one selling smoothie is the Fruit of Steel—with blueberry, pomegranate, acai, low-fat vanilla yogurt, strawberries, protein blend and flaxseed—though the Oxidizer smoothie comes in at a close second. On their café menu, customer-favorite entrées are The Toasted Cuban and the City Chicken Pita.

While those menu items seem like they would be chock full of calories, they aren’t. In fact, everything on the café menu and smoothie menu is under 580 calories, making it OK to “pig out.” That might be one of the reasons Balance Café & Smoothies was ranked No. 21 on WLWT and Yelp’s Top 50 Places to Eat in the Tristate in 2015.

Davis and Morgan also want to teach kids about healthy snacks in the café’s new Food Exploration Class for kids. During each class, kids learn about different foods to help jump-start a healthy lifestyle and get to make a quick snack.

“Our passion is to take the stress out of cooking,” says Morgan. “Fresh is easy and simple.”

Classes last roughly 45 minutes and are held on Mondays and Saturdays.
