Sutter Homes Inc. has literally written the book on building a custom home. The 109-page book, titled Building a Quality Custom Home, was written a couple years ago by Tom and Lynn Sutter as a guide to a dream home.

“We found that a lot of customers in this market didn’t know where to start,” says Lynn, who had a career in public relations and marketing before she and Tom launched Sutter Homes 21 years ago.

Lynn calls the home building business their second partnership. “We’ve been married 38 years,” she says. Son, Eric, and daughter, Kadie, also are part of the firm.

Tom started a partnership with his father, Tom, Sr., building log homes in the Tristate nearly 40 years ago. “They built more than 80 log homes in the area,” Lynn says before gravitating into custom homes.

Sutter Homes focuses on homes priced at $500,000 and up. It focuses on custom design and high-end features, so the firm typically builds fewer than 10 homes a year.

“We’ve never built the same home twice in all years we’ve been in business,” says Lynn. “We take people’s dreams and bring them to life, and we don’t let people make mistakes.” Building a custom home isn’t for everyone, she says, because it requires a lot of choices.

Sutter Home’s newest venture is Williams Reserve, an exclusive development of 15 two-plus acre wooded home sites starting at $150,000 in Hebron.

“We love Hebron and there was no place else in Boone County where we could buy property and build the way we like to build,” she says.
