The ATHENA® Award honors outstanding individuals who have achieved professional excellence, given back to their communities and created leadership and business opportunities for women.

Martha Mertz, a Michigan business woman, founded ATHENA® International ( in the early 1980s when she learned that she was the only woman on the board of directors for the Lansing, Mich., Chamber of Commerce. The Athena organization is devoted to supporting, developing and honoring women leaders, inspiring them to achieve their full potential, and creating balance in leadership worldwide.

This is the second year for the ATHENA® Award program in Cincinnati, joining the more than 300 programs in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada that support the ATHENA® International mission.

A judging panel of leading Greater Cincinnati businesspeople voted on dozens of nominations to create a list of 11 finalists, then selected the recipient of the 2007 award. Recipients may win the award only once.

The ATHENA® Award is represented by an original bronze and marble sculpture inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment — qualities embodied in the ATHENA® leadership model.
